We’re committed to staying in Limerick during our time (two and a half days) in the western part of Ireland, so I am considering a day trip from Limerick to take in the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula and back to Limerick. Is that crazy? I know it’d make more sense to stay on the coast, but that’s not possible.
Maybe one or the other but certainly not both in one day. It takes nearly 3 hours to drive from Limerick to Dingle. Adding the time it then takes for a leisurely drive around Slea Head and visiting the other attractions on the peninsula will result in a very full day.
RS always recommends one or the other, not both. Most people commenting on this forum say they loved Dingle, both the scenery and the people & local culture. The general consensus seems to be that Ring of Kerry is overrun by tour buses.
Thanks, guys for the input. Unfortunately, you told me what I knew I’d here but was in deep denial about accepting. I guess reality wins!
Ring of Kerry is great and NOT overrun with tour buses. They've widened the roads and its not remotely the hassle it was twenty years ago. It's awesome......we just spent weeks on it last month....not one tour bus traffic problem except road construction in Killarney. The south side especially is incredible and its off shoot the Skellig Ring - which doesn't even allow tour buses - is one of the highlights of Ireland.
That being said trying to do both is way too much in that time sadly. Disagree with Rick on that one .....both are very different and are both very worth visiting in the same trip IF you have the time. Since you don't Dingle is the best option for a one day trip. Slea Head to Dunquin is unbelievable and so worth the trip. Don't sweat not being able to do both.......Dingle will be so fantastic......you'll love it. We were just in Ireland for a long many week stay and we didn't cover everything we hoped to......and that's okay. Have great fun !
That’s great information to have. Thanks a lot.
