Does anyone have any recommendations for lodging in County Roscommon? A distant cousin of mine and I are going to visit our ancestors' farmland in the Ballyglass West townland. There isn't a lot in the area, so I'm wondering if anyone can make some suggestions for a couple of nights' lodging.
I don't have a specific recommendation but am replying to "up" your post. When you say there isn't a lot in the area, how large is the area you're willing to consider? The entire county of Roscommon, as implied in your title? Or just the Ballyglass West townland? Or some intermediate radius of, say, half an hour's drive?
Also, are you a party of two adults, or will there be children or other family members along?
Thanks epltd -- We are two parties, one is three adults and the other is two adults. We don't necessarily need a place together but in the same vicinity would be nice. Nearby would be fine, we have so little knowledge of the area we're just not sure what towns to even look in. I saw a few nice-looking places in Claremorris, which is I guess 30-40 minutes away from our area of interest. So that might work. It's had to rely on online search sites because they'll list places that are a good hour away or more. Thanks!
We stayed in the town of Ballaghaderreen in Roscommon because we have family there. It seems to be about a 12 minute drive from Ballyglass West. It's a decent sized town. There were several B&Bs in the area. We ate dinner at Durkins, which is also a guesthouse. I don't remember the name of the place we stayed, but if you Google Ballahaderren, a list of accommodations shows up. The Fiddlers Elbow is the pub where we spent a fun evening after a wedding.
My family is from that area of Roscommon. I can't recommend a specific place to saty as I have always stayed with family. You might take a look at Castlerea, it is a fair sized town and on the N60, it's about 15 mins. away.
Thanks va and Archimedes! The Fiddler's Elbow is a great name for a pub!
