Cork Travel

If we are staying near the cork airport and want to travel into cork city to see some sites (including the Old English market) would it be best to drive in or would it be best to take a bus? I'm not sure what the parking situation would be like if we took our rental car.

Also, any pointers for what are the best sites to see in one day around cork?

Any advice would be appreciated!

I would not drive into the city. Traffic is terrible there, and parking is scarce and expensive. Public transportation is easy, and cities usually have a transportation day pass that you can use for 24 hours to get around at will.

Any specifics on what bus I would take/where I would pick it up from Cork airport/etc. to get into the city centre?

Thanks!

When we went into Cork for an afternoon of shopping (our main destination was the 'English Market' too) we parked in the multi-story lot for the Merchant's Quay Shopping Centre.

Of course, we were coming from the north and it's right there as you cross over the bridge. Perhaps coming from the south there are better options.

Don't tell Kent this, but we drove down from Shannon on the day we landed. It was just getting to be rush hour by the time we got into town (this made for excellent deals as the butchers in the English Market were closing up shop!) so the traffic was gridlocked, but Irish drivers are quite polite when merging and it wasn't stressful at all.

Ground transportation, including buses, will be well-marked at the airport.
