Any recommendations on a good central area to stay in the Connemara area? Maybe some ideas on favorite things to do see?
We are arriving in Dublin on Oct 9, plan on stopping in Gortnadeeve on our way to Galway/Connemara where we plan on staying 2 nights. My husbands great great grandfather supposedly is from Gortnadeeve and supposedly his cottage still stands so we figure it would be a cool stop to make.
When you say "central area," do you mean convenient to Galway? Convenient to Westport? or smack in the center of the Connemara peninsula?
A plain old Google map shows a variety of lodging located in various spots around the peninsula

I haven't stayed in any of these personally so can't judge, but lots of people say they loved Connemara in general.
The RS guide to Ireland pp. 342-358 lists itineraries, restaurants, sights, and lodging (the latter in Westport).
We stayed at the Abbeyglen on Sky Road in Clifden. Really enjoyed it and Connemara area is beautiful. Really enjoyed the Hawk Walk at Ashford.
We were thinking out in the Clifden area but now thinking maybe near Galway and just drive around Connemara.
Is Galway hard to drive around? would it be better to stay outside Galway and is there public transportation into the city center? Hmmm tough decisions!
I would also suggest Clifden. The Sky Road has a number of B&B's. It would be a very long driving day to try to drive the whole peninsula from Galway. For one thing, you will want to make photo stops - every other minute!
