Confused about car insurance 😕

I know there have been lots of posts about car rentals. I've read them. I read the guide book. So today I start looking into quotes for our trip in October and I'm now totally confused!

Some sites don't even list insurance when booking?

Then there are those that do but offer different types?

We checked our credit card and Ireland isn't covered, naturally. Lol

So can someone advise me about the differences in car insurance there and which company is best etc.

Thanks!

There is extensive information over on the board under "Transportation" regarding rental car insurance.

I rented a car online from Auto Europe. One month travel in September. Compact car with auto transmission from Hertz. Per Rick Steves Ireland Guidebook, I added Super CDW to cover all auto damage liability events. The country roads are narrow, and Irish drivers are not so attentive on the roads.

Good luck.

Thank you - all. Ricks tips helped. Some companies were trying to sell me extra insurance

As of 9/01/2017 American Express cardholder benefits covers rented vehicles in Ireland. I recently called to confirm this.

I too am very confused, and somehow buying the CDW insurance and the "super" insurance offered piece of mind---but it seems to be a very expensive add on to the cost of renting a car. However, I did just got off a rather lengthy phone call with our Southwest Airlines/Chase card and it seems that we are covered for damage to the car and theft of the car---no personal property protection was included in this insurance nor medical coverage, and I have asked that they send a letter to us that notes what the coverage is so I can have it to present at the rental car company if I need it. So I think at this point I am going to pass up on the expensive insurance and stick with my credit card coverage......Thoughts ?????

Glad AmEx will provide coverage in Ireland, but most cards and insurance companies such as Allianz don't. In Ireland i just get it through the rental car company, although it is expensive. Ensure you also are covered for liability and not just CDW. If your card does cover CDW, then consider liability through the rental company. It's fairly inexpensive.

Check your coverage details. My Amex Everyday Cash card offers rental car loss and damage insurance, but the terms exclude Ireland as well as a few other countries (Australia, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand). I just checked due to this thread.
