Hello,
We are in the beginning phase of planning a self-drive trip of Ireland (approximately 19 days excluding travel days). Has anyone used Celtic Selfdrive Vacations? In addition to the car rental, apparently they will help with planning and accommodations. Has anyone used them or a similar company? Or is it easy to do it on your own?
Thanks!
Well, Ireland is pretty easy to visit on your own. But it does take time to do your own accommodation search and reservations, decide where you want to go, etc. If you don’t have the time (or don’t want to spend the time) I am sure paying someone arrange it for you will be ok.
I like doing my own advance prep because then I have a better idea of what I am going to see and a better idea for back up options if weather interferes, etc. Plus I can spend that money I’d be paying the company elsewhere on my trip. However, I occasionally do pay someone to do it for me if the situation seems to warrant.
Here’s what I did with 3 weeks last year. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/3-weeks-in-ireland-2024
It is very easy to do it yourself - as long as you have the will and the time. It is also likely to be cheaper. You could always begin by looking at the suggested tours itineraries on their website for ideas to get you started.
Buy a good guide book - DK Eyewitness Ireland is my favourite as it has lots of pictures, good descriptions of places (including many that don't feature in other guide books ) and maps detailed enough for initial planning. DK also do a Back Roads Ireland guide with 25 easy-to-follow driving tours, each lasting one to five days with ideas for accommodation.
Post your thoughts here and you will get lots of free help in planning an itinerary with suggestions and ideas. Unless you stick with one of Celtic Self Drives standard itineraries, you will probably want to do this research anyway and customise the tour to meet your expectations and desires by adding in extra time in some places or omitting others.
