Hi this topic is heavily discussed on the forum. What service do you have? If you have AT&T or Verizon it’s best to get the international day pass which is $10 per day. You don’t need service to take photos

Husband and I have Verizon. I use the $10 a day travel pass which allows you to use your phone just like at home. Husband sets his phone to airplane mode and just uses wifi when we're in our room. You don't need cell service at all to take photos with your phone

You don't need cell phone service to take pictures with your phone while in Ireland. Your phone can take photos even with no service.

You can also use your phone on WiFi without any mobile service in Ireland. Just put the phone in "Airplane Mode" and keep it there your entire trip...but turn on WiFi.

If you want actual mobile service away from WiFi? Either you need international roaming provided by your mobile carrier (if they offer it) or if your phone is unlocked, you can buy an Irish SIM card to use while in Ireland. As noted, AT&T and Verizon offer daily roaming passes. T-Mobile's international roaming is free but slow. Other mobile carriers may not offer international roaming at all. Some people choose to stick to WiFi at their hotel or at restaurants and get by with that and not try international roaming at all or bother with the Irish SIM.

On the international day pass, it’s pay per use. you can put your phone on airplane mode and just use Wi-Fi and you won’t be billed for that day

Another option (more hassle but an option) is to rent a hot spot for while you are there (we have a WiFi Candy unit reserved). You then enable WiFi calling on your phone and disable mobile data on the phone and make calls through the hot spot. Calls and text messages to/from the US are free (at least from all the calls and research I have done). I also have a google voice account setup on each of our phones to call Ireland numbers with (.01 per minute). I had our carrier (USCellular) enable our phones on pay as you go in case of emergency and the hot spot not working etc.

The biggest downside is we all have to be in range of the hot spot or another open wireless to make/receive calls. We were going to get the hot spot anyway for tablet and computer use etc.
