My husband and I would like to stay in a castle one night as well as golf at some point while in Ireland. Mainly sticking to the south and the west or Ireland. Any suggestions that would be great but not bust the bank?
My husband really enjoyed playing at the Westport Golf Club and Dingle Golf Links (Cheann Sibeal). He was able to rent good clubs at both courses and neither was excessively expensive. They were each lovely (I walked along but didn't play)--the Dingle course has great views of The Sleeping Giant and the Westport course has wonderful views of Croagh Patrick.
Our TAUCK Tour took us to Ireland for 14 days. We very much enjoyed spending two nights at the Ashford Castle. We wished we could have stayed longer. We hope to go back to Ireland and spend maybe five or six nights there. There is golf there also. It is the former summer home for the Guinness Family. It was beyond gorgeous when we visited four years ago. It has recently undergone a multi million dollar remodel. It is spectacular. Some people online say it was their most favorite place to visit while in Ireland.
We stayed at Ballynahinch Castle near Clifden on our trip. It was lovely and much less expensive than Ashford (though we did go to Ashford for the hawk walk), but also on a smaller scale. Both breakfast and dinner was included at our stay at Ballynahinch. We stayed two nights, and did lovely drive to Clifden and the Sky Road, and through the Connemara National Park to Kylemore Abbey. They have the option to add on fly fishing and other activities. Lots of walking paths as well. I'd highly recommend it!
I had also looked into Dromoland, which is further south, but it was booked. I have heard good things about it as well.
No recommendations for golf. Sorry!
