I'm working on my Ireland itinerary, and on this forum I am seeing several references to Castlemaine. However, it looks to me like it doesn't even warrant a mention in the RS book (2019). It appears to be a great alternative to Galway, with short driving time to both Galway and the Dingle Peninsula. Tell me more!
Well if you check the map you'll see that it's centrally located for easy access to the northern part of the ROK - including the Gap of Dunloe, the Skellig Ring and Killarney while still being convenient for use as a base for Dingle, so you could settle in for several days and only have to unpack once. Don't have to battle the hordes in Killarney town either.
Can look in the surrounding area too - Glenbeigh is another possibility.
Not really convenient for Galway ... which is about 3 hours away.
Robert, have you been to Castlemaine and/or Glenveigh? I'm all for settling in at one location for a few days. I found it interesting to find so many references to Castlemaine on this site when Rick doesn't mention it. I guess our RS community is branching out, which is sometimes good and sometimes scary!
Yes, we've been all over the area many times. After a lot of trial and error, including one greatly regretted stay in Killarney town many years ago, we've settled on that little stretch as our preferred base for the area.
Our preference is to stay in one spot and do day trips from there, and have found the area near Castlemaine to be ideal for that.
Love the Castlemaine area. It's a perfect base for the Dingle Peninsula, the ROK and the sights near (not In) Killarney. It's a beautiful calm area with very nice pubs (LOVE The Anvil) and restaurants there or in nearby Milltown. We've stayed there several times and love it's convenience, it's small real Irish feel, as opposed to the dreadfully crowded Killarney. Other good options are the Kilorglin area and the previously mentioned Glenbeigh which has wonderful horseback riding on the beach.
Ultimately it depends on what you are looking for but as a home base to explore the ROK/Skellig Ring and Dingle it's fantastic and allows you to experience more of real wild Ireland rather than touristy Ireland. Btw the people there are incredibly welcoming in a land of very welcoming warm, funny people.
I agree with the previous posters, however, there isn’t much to this town. If you want choices for restaurants that are in town, you would need a larger town. It just depends what you like.
We rented a cottage just 3-4 miles west of Castlemaine-around Fybagh-and it is a great location, for sure. I will say that being out there definitely prevented me tipping even a pint in Dingle, not wanting to do the 10-12 mile ride back in such a state ;-). But that and the lack of restaurants is the only downside, you've got to plan; it's just lovely out there.
