Cash or Credit Card in Northern Ireland

I will be on the 14 day R.S. tour in July, and the last 3 days are spent in Northern Ireland. Will I need to buy British Pounds or are credit cards readily accepted?

If I were you I'd take cash of course credit cards are accepted but some places are cash only plus here in Europe European cards have a chip in them North American cards don't so bring your credit card yes but bring cash as well I am from Northern Ireland btw

US cards do have chips, they don't have pins. This would only be a problem at places like gas stations with automatic payments. But even that is changing.

Anyway, today, most cards utilize contactless payments. Make sure your cards have that ability to use contactless payments.

I spent five days in Nothern Ireland last fall. Never used cash. But, if you really feel better using cash, there are ATM's everywhere.

I am from Northern Ireland and not everywhere takes cards some places are cash only...why I don't know why mainly I think to avoid paying taxes to HM Government (his majesty's government aka the UK government)

I was just in N.Ireland/Ireland for three weeks and besides a couple of B&Bs and walking tours that were cash only, I exclusively used "Tap to Pay" using my cellphone. Never used anything else except a debit card that I carry for ATMs for those rare needs for cash. Buskers/homeless haven't upgraded to cards yet if your a charitable sort.

I was warned by a cab driver not to get a lot of N.Ireland bank issued pounds since they are generally refused elsewhere in the UK. UK pounds are fine in NI, however if you have some souvenirs from prior travel.

In Manchester, some off the buskers have signs stating "We now accept credit cards."

Northern Ireland issued banknotes ARE UK banknotes ...I think you're on about the locally issued Northern Irish banknotes issued by Ulster Bank danske bank and the bank of Ireland commercial banks these are equal in value to the normal bank of England (despite its name it's the UK central bank) and the bank of England regulates the note issues in Northern Ireland and Scotland it's all UK currency if it is Bank of England banknotes or local Northern Ireland or Scottish bank notes it's all British pounds and before any one asks the old bank of England banknotes with the Queen's head on them are still valid as long as they are polymer (plastic material)

We had the same experience last year in England and Scotland, ie the local merchants wouldn't accept our leftover NI banknotes. Finally found one in London who did but they weren't too happy about it.

NI notes are legal currency in the rest of the UK, I have had my NI notes accepted no problems in England

I think that from the discussion I have come to the following conclusion - bring about 60 pounds from my bank, and make sure they are British Pounds.
