Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

We will be Belfast for several days in late August, early September. We would like to take a tour that includes the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. (As we won’t have a car). Many tour companies say it includes the bridge, but then later in the description it says that the bridge is closed. However, the website for the bridge says they are open. Anyone have any info on this. Thanks.

I am also interested in this bridge, and was wondering if it’s part of the Best of Ireland tour for those of you who have taken it. From the website it looks like you just have to book ahead of time. Slots are available now to book.

Per comment on McComb's Tours, on a tour that would have included this, "The National Trust have also made the decision to no longer allow any coaches to visit Carrick-a-rede Ropebridge, therefore we will not be visiting Carrick-a-rede Ropebridge while this policy remains in place." Thus, at the current time it looks like this is an activity that you would have to arrange on your own, which appears to be possible only if you have your own transportation. Having just done this tour with McComb's in April, we would highly recommend their Giant' Causeway Tour, the couple hours they get you at the Causeway on your own are incredible. If you have interest in the Titanic, their combo ticket for this and Titanic Belfast is a bargain and well worth it.

If you’re able to get to the bridge it is a daunting but fun experience. I don’t like heights or bridges but conquered my fear and found this very safe and enjoyable.

Anne,

Per the Carrick-a-Rede website, the venue is now closed to buses so it doesn’t look like the Best of Ireland tour will go there which is disappointing as we had hoped to do this on our tour in August/September.

I was on the RS Best of Ireland tour last month and we didn't go to the bridge because of the National Trust policy quoted above. That was fine with me because you couldn't pay me enough to get on that thing! ;-)

The “rope” bridge and the Giant’s causeway are very much worth visiting. We had a rental car and visited both on the same day, as well as stopping for a tour of the Old Bushmills distillery.

I emailed the National Trust and received quick and specific replies. They are only permitting pre-ticketed individuals that arrive by car to cross the bridge. Tours are NOT able to cross. This is a disappointment as we were thinking of our tour of the Giant's Causeway and the bridge out of Belfast. We are now going to consider renting a car as I really did want to go across! National Trust was VERY responsive.

Quick question: Would the National Trust allow visitors that arrive by the regularly scheduled public transportation have access? If so, you could try train to Coleraine and public transit bus to the bridge.

The “rope” bridge ...the Old Bushmills distillery.

The bridge is definitely worth whatever it takes to traverse it. It's also an experience that deserves a tot or two from the distillery afterword -- or before depending on one's appreciation (or lack thereof) of heights.
