Can this be done?

Leave Dublin by car early morning of day 1, drive to Wicklow Mtns & Powerscourt, overnight somewhere (maybe Kilkenny, open to suggestions), day 2, walk through medieval streets of Kilkenny and visit Rock of Cashel, leaving around 5:00-6:00 pm to drive back to Dublin. This will be in mid-May. I realize this is not ideal, but....this is all the time we have, as we want to spend 1 1/2 days in Dublin. Thank you for you input.

It probably is possible, but it will be rushed. I would check the Michelon website for driving times, and see how much time you'll be on the road. I added about 20% to their estimated driving time and found that to be fairly accurate.

An alternative that would keep you on the road for a shorter time would be to substitute the monastic ruin of Glendalough for the rock of Cashel. Your first day will end up taking you near Glendalough, and I enjoyed a night in the town. I actually preferred the ruins at Glendalough; it's in a lovely Valley.

Hi Susan,
We are starting out our trip the same way in mid-May. You could spend the first night in Kilkenny at Butler Court (Rick approved) and then meander over to the Rock the next day in the early afternoon. To beat the crowds he does suggest going either before 11 a.m. or after 3 p.m. I don't know how long it takes to get to Cashel from Kilkenney. Anyone? I believe it's about 2 hours back to Dublin from there though.

I don’t see why you would not be able to do it.

We did a similar trip in 2007. We left Dublin in the morning to see Powerscourt and Glendalough and spent the night in Kilkenny. We did not rush ourselves at Powerscourt or Glendalough, which meant we did not arrive in Kilkenny until late (dinner).

The next day, we went to the Rock of Cashel then on to Kinsale.

All three were awesome. Have a great time!!

You should be able to do it. I'd suggest staying in Kilkenny to give you time there and still see Cashel and get back to Dublin in the evening. last summer we went from Dublin airport to Kilkenny with a stop at Powerscourt, we left Dublin in the mid morning and got to Kilkenny in the evening.

Thanks on the suggestions and encouragement. We will pick-up rental car Tuesday morning at the airport, drive to Powerscourt and Glendalough and spend the night at a air bnb place in Bennetsbridge, just outside Kilkenny. We will meander through Kilkenny in the morning have lunch and then drive to Cashel. Leave around 3:30pm and drive back through Kildare and arrive back in Dublin at B&B north of city center around 8:00.
