Bus travel - Ireland

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows if you have to pre-book (pre-purchase) bus tickets in advance like you would for train travel in both the Republic and N. Ireland? One as a guarantee for a seat and or cost savings.

This would be for town to town connections where the trains do not service.

Travel time would be July.

Thank you in advance
Regards,
Tania

I prebooked our bus between Derry and Galway. I was glad that I did since it was quite the busy route. It was a very long day. If I were to do that journey again, I would probably break it up into two days if possible. There was only one short stop along the way that was hardly long enough for a bathroom break even.

I will say, that one of the times when we felt most like a "local" was on the bus. We had a chance to people watch and it was also fun to go into the center of several towns and villages along the way.

Thank you for the advice. Especially the N.Ireland info. We are planning 3 weeks and half of that time up along the north coast from Belfast over to Derry. Cheers!!

I found bus transport along the Antrim Coast especially convenient and user friendly. We stayed at the Bayview Hotel in Port Ballintrae and it is one of our favorite hotels ever. The bus stops right at the hotel.
We took the train from Belfast to Coleraine, walked through the station to the awaiting bus, and were dropped off next to the hotel. It couldn't have been easier.
