We would like to take a side trip to Newgrange while in Dublin. Is there transportation/bus that goes up there?
We stayed a few extra days in Dublin after our RS Ireland tour in 2014 so we could visit Newgrange. We used Mary Gibbons Tours as Rick recommended them. We were picked up and returned just a few blocks from our hotel! While our main interest was Newgrange there are several other stops included. It was easy to do and I would recommend her tour for the convenience. You can get lunch at the Newgrange visitor center.
Another vote for the Mary Gibbons tour of Newgrange (and a few other stops plus great commentary along the way.) You might want to put her name in the search box above to harvest comments from the many posts that address the topic. Perhaps also visit TripAdvisor if you have any doubts. We thought it was a great value, and while we aren't usually interested in bus tours, it was very relaxing not to be driving on the day we did the tour. You can board the bus at one of four central locations in Dublin; everyone disembarks at days' end near St. Stephen's Green -- handy for more site-seeing, pubs and dining. (She doesn't lead all the tours. Our guide was Phelan, a remarkably well-informed, interesting and charming gentleman with a scholarly background in history and archeology.)
Sorry, I was confused about the availability of the Newgrange Tours company and didn't notice it on p. 121. It was actually just the direct public bus that was discontinued. There is also the train+ taxi option via Drogheda.
The Mary Gibbons Newgrange tour is excellent. Phelan is Mary's brother. Both are knowledgeable archeologists. If time permits, visit the Museum of Archeology (free entry, located between Trinity College and St. Stephen's Green) before taking the tour. First, the museum is interesting and second, it helps to provide some history and background to both Newgrange and the Boyne Valley.
Apparently a new henge near Newgrange has just been discovered. Probably not accessible to the public, but the tour directors are likely to have some interesting observations about it to share.
This answer may be too late, not sure if you've already been to Ireland. But, a few years ago, we used a day tour we found on Viator and enjoyed it very much. It's the tour that goes to Newgrange and Hill of Tara. You meet at the Visitor's Center on O'Connell Street. It was about $42 each. Newgrange is awesome!
Prob too late for original poster, but I just read recently that the Newgrange visitors center will be closed for refurbishing until about July 2019. Tours and site are still open tho.
I took a tour through Viator to Newgrange.
Viator is a 3rd party tour re-seller and does not actually run any tours themselves. With a little detective work you can figure out the name of the company that actually provides the tour and book directly with them. That might save you some money or it will save the tour company money as they have to pay Viator for the bookings.
I used Bus Eirann that left from the downtown bus station. It was a great value. We stopped for Newgrange, Hill of Tara as well as Battle of the Boyne. We drove by Trim but it was under construction and closed at the time.
They have another bus that goes to Glendalough through Wicklow.
The Mary Gibbons Tour to Newgrange was excellent! She commented during the bus ride as we passed various interesting points. Loved her beautiful Irish voice! Definitely one of the best tours we've ever taken. And, honestly, we mostly avoid tours!
