Breaking up drive from Ennis to Dublin

Any suggestions for how to best split up the drive from Ennis to Dublin? We are traveling with kids, and 2.5 hours at a clip is just a lot. I was thinking we could drive to Craggaunowen and spend some time there, but then I don't know how to split up the rest of the drive (at least for an hour or two in the middle).

Thanks!

Hi from Wisconsin,
Kildare has a few places of interest. But would kids be interested in St. Brigid, her cathedral and well.

To the south of Dublin are the Wicklow Mountains with Glendalough. But that is maybe a choice only if you are wanting to enter Dublin from the south.

The monastic site at Clonmacnoise might be of interest ... about a 1+20 drive from Ennis along modern motorways. Besides the historical significance of the place, its location along the banks of the river Shannon make it a particularly evocative location - ready made to order for running the kids around as they try to imagine the Viking raids from years past.
Would be at about the halfway point along your drive.

On a similar drive back to Dublin, we enjoyed a stop at Irish National Stud in Kildare, the Irish-Government owned thoroughbred breeding facility: beautiful gardens, interesting walking tour, nice cafe...and not a few horses.
