Booking a taxi for longish distances

I am taking two friends to Ireland for their first visit this May. I've been there 4 times before, but do NOT want to drive. But I've pieced together some good transportation options, so I'm not worried.

My question is: If we want to take a taxi for a long-ish drive (for example, from the Rock of Cashel to our B&B outside Killarney), can I do that without prebooking? If we want to prebook, how can I best do that?

I've priced out the options, and in some cases, I'd rather spend the extra money (and save time) on a point-to-point trip by taxi than cobble together train and bus fare (x3).

Thanks!

Stacy,

since you're going in May i don't think you need too much prebooking. if it was August I'd say something different! I would also say if you're in country they may do it "off the meter" and save you a few bob!

I took a taxi from Killarney to Tralee for a Dr. appointment and it was 50 euros. I thought that was crazy, but booked an xray assuming there was an early bus from killarney - there isn't! You might want to check a few prices but not committ. I have a guy in Killarney who I use and just call him every time i need a taxi now, anywhere on the southwest area. Sometimes he hooks me up with a cabby coming back from another gig so it works out for both of us.... so just be open to suggestions!
