Book of Kells/museums/gaol planning for 2 days

Hi all.

Arriving 9am Friday in Dublin from the US. Picking up rental car at some point Sunday morning and driving to Cashel.

In the interim would like to do BOK, some museums, Dublin castle and the gaol. Doing "afternoon" tea Friday evening.

What would you guys recommend for the itinerary for the other stuff? I know we can buy tickets online in advance for BOK.

Thanks!

hey Mike one thing about the gaol tour. When I first checked the site online the day I wanted (just two days in advance) showed no tickets were available, it was for a Sunday. That Sunday morning I checked again and there were several times then showing tickets available. I then purchased the tix online and we did the tour. Walk up tickets are sometimes available according to the website. My point is try to reserve tickets and check a couple of times if is shows none available, I'm not sure why the times opened up the day we wanted to tour but they did become available. We purchased the hop on hop off bus pass and rode the bus out to the jail. We stayed in the Temple Bar area and walked to Trinity and the Archeology Museum (free). Walking around Grafton Street and Temple Bar is pretty amazing on its own, music all round. For me nothing in Dublin though compared to west Ireland but its all good!!! We also did Rick's suggested musical pub crawl that met at Gogarty's Pub and it was laid back and there was some great traditional Irish music at a relative early hour!

Book Kilmainham online in advanced so you can plan the rest of your time.

The Westbury and The Shelbourne have really nice afternoon tea.

Guess I got lucky. We were in Dublin in October when we went and bought our tickets for BoK that day. No line, no wait.

Thank you for helpful replies. We are going to the Shelbourne actually for tea on Friday. Will book gaol tickets ahead of time.

I try for BOK as early in the day as possible-that place gets so crowded it's hard to see. The adjacent library is stunning and worth some time. They stagger the groups in the goal better so that it's easy to see everything there.

Do you guys think I should we should do Gaol Friday or Saturday? And BoK Friday or Saturday?

MikeK,
Regarding The Book of Kelly's: Take your time touring the exhibit about the BOK which is before the actual viewing. Because there are so many people in the exhibit ,it makes it too easy to rush through the exhibit. And, of course, take your time in the library after the viewing.

I don't think that doing it a Friday or Saturday makes any difference.. just make sure to pre-purchase your tickets

While you're near the BOK, stop in at St. Patrick's Cathedral around the corner. One of my faves was the National Archaeology Museum, also pretty close and free. If you have a free evening, take the Literary Pub Crawl - it's excellent.

Agree with Sharon-doesn't really matter when, just that you book ahead. We did both in the same day; we did BOK in the morning and then had 1pm tickets for the goal. We went early and had lunch in their cafeteria. We had a very enjoyable dinner at The Bank of College Green. We booked ahead and had their prix fixe menu.
