Book ahead in southern ireland?

We are traveling by car around the Southern Ireland -flying into Shannon , going to the Dingle Pennisula, Cork etc with friends who did this trip 14 years ago. We will be in the area for 5 days. Our friends booked no rooms on their trip 14 years ago. They simply drove around, stopped when they were ready and went to local's home who rented rooms.

We are wondering is this still the case or is it wise to book ahead? We will be there Sept 13-18.
thank you very much!

More and more people are traveling nowadays, and the tourist infrastructure hasn't necessarily expanded in proportion to the increased demand. The area you'll be visiting is very popular. I would guess you'll be better off booking ahead. If you really don't care to do that, you may get stuck in an unpleasant or overpriced lodging here and there. A compromise would be to look on a site such as Booking.com about 3 or 4 days ahead of time and see how much availability there is in the place where you plan to be.

One good aspect of traveling nowadays is pretty much every hotel has Internet access. If traveling on the fly, book your arrival day’s hotel so you know you have a place, but wait for the others until you have an idea where or which town you’ll be staying in, then book a day in advance. You shouldn’t have a difficult time finding a place the time of year you’re going, unless you arrive late afternoon after most others have stopped for the day.
