Best way too get to Kilmainham Gaol and Guinness Storehouse outside Dublin?

In May, 2019 we will be staying near Dublin Castle and want on one day to visit both Kilmainham Gaol and Guinness Storehouse. Rick Steve's Ireland Tour Book recommends making advance reservations. If we take the Hop On/Hop Off Bus that stops at both locations, how can we be assured of arriving on time for our tours? Or should we take a taxi?

I agree about taking the taxi. We were staying on the south side of St. Stephen's Green and decided to walk to the Gaol because we wanted to see something else on the way. It was REALLY a long walk. We took a taxi on the way back and had the best discussion about rugby and American football with the cabbie.

We used public transportation. Takes some time and a bit of a walk at the end. Not too bad if you are healthy. The time involved bothered me more.

We had HOHO tickets but took a taxi to the Gaol to be certain we'd arrive in time for our reserved slots. (Then rode the HOHO back into central Dublin after the tour.)

Have been to both. We went on a tour of the Gaol first and then went to the Brewery. They are walking distance from each other, about a 15 to 20 min walk.

Definitely make reservations at the Gaol. I had late morning reservations and they were telling people arriving without them that the earliest opening was at 4 PM.

If you do arrive early, you can go through the museum or there is a cafeteria where you can get something to eat or drink.

I had HOHO tickets and did arrive early so I did both of the above.

I can't speak for the storehouse as I have never been. If I want a pint of Guinness, one of my favorites, I can walk into any pub in Dublin.

My suggestion, if you do want to do the HOHO bus tour is plan to start early in the morning, hit the Guiness Storehouse first and then make Gaol reservations for the early afternoon. If I remember correctly, the time between the Storehouse and the Gaol was no more than 15-20 minutes at max. You might want to even arrive at the Gaol early and have lunch there.

Or if you don't want to do the HOHO bus, taxis are easy. Do not rely on the public buses if you have time constraints. Twice in Dublin the buses just passed me by at bus stops when they had few people on board.

Previous post mentions buses passing by; remember to stick your hand out in good time to indicate to the driver that you want the bus to stop. Can be difficult if there are a lot of people waiting at the stop.

I stuck my hand out and I was the only one at the bus stop. He saw me. He stopped for a traffic light about a hundred feet away and I went running for the bus. He just waved me away.

I was late for a train at Heuston so I hailed a cab. We caught up to the bus at Heuston. The bus driver was so insonsiderate that instead of pulling up to the curb to let people out, he just angled the bus in the block all the cars behind him.

Another time, I waited at a bus stop that had the bus number I wanted on the sign. The bus came and the driver waved me off pointing to the next stop.

The cab driver I mentioned above was very nice and the next time I'm in Dublin, if Ihave a choice between a city buy and a cab, I'll take the cab. The city isn't that big.

Get your tickets for the Gaol tour asap on line (if you haven't already) or you might not get in. The tour takes an hour, with free time at the end to roam around the museum. From the Gaol the Guinness Storehouse is about a fifteen minute walk. We took a taxi from our hotel to the Gaol, walked to the Storehouse, and took a taxi back to our hotel. Easy.

On our RS tour last April, we booked tickets to the Gaol and took a taxi from our hotel for our timed tour, then we just wander back walking back to the city center. Guinness was on the way back. We did not buy tickets ahead of time and got in fine when we were there .
