Best way to Scotland?

My friends and I are traveling to Ireland and staying for a few days in Ennis. We'd like to go to Scotland for a couple of days and then flying back to Houston, TX out of Heathrow. What is the best way for us to travel from Dublin to Scotland and then to Heathrow to get our plane back home? Train? Bus? Car (on the ferry)?

Thanks so much for your help.

Flying is really the only way in such a short time.

If you're staying in Ennis you can fly from Shannon to Edinburgh.

There are also flights from Dublin to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

From Scotland to Heathrow another flight (preferably connecting to your Houston flight) would make most sense.

I would not want to fly into Heathrow from Scotland the same day as my overseas flight. It will be a separate ticket and you have no protection if your flight from Scotland is delayed or canceled. Better to go the day before and spend the night, if not in London then someplace close to the airport like Windsor.

If you do that you can go by train---it is about 4.5 hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh to London.

Thank you all for your suggestions. We weren't going to fly back to Heathrow the same day as our flight home to Houston. Probably the day before our flight home so we wouldn't be so rushed. But I will give these suggestions to my friends and decide what we want to do to make the most of our trip. Thank you!

If you haven't booked your flights to and from the US yet, look into open jaw (multi city) flights. For instance, Houston to Shannon and Edinburgh to Houston - all on one ticket. This way, your connections are "protected" in that the airline is responsible for getting you to your final ticketed destinations, and they'll put you on the next available flight.

Our tickets to Ireland have been purchased since the beginning of the year. I think it's been decided to take a ferry to Scotland, spend a day/night, and then back to Ireland. Now, once we get there, I don't know how feasible this will be but I guess we'll find out when we're there. I'm the only one in the group who has traveled to Ireland but none of us has been to Scotland. So, if we do go to Scotland, where is a reasonably priced, decent B&B in the Glasgow area?

We did something like this last year. We flew in and out of Dublin, but we went to Dingle, Cork, London and Edinburgh in between. We flew between all the cities on Aer Lingus and Flybe, and it was fairly cheap. Our shortest time was in Edinburgh, about 36 hours, but I'm so glad we went. It's a great, walkable city, and we were able to see the major sites in that short time.
