Hello, we are traveling from Galway to Kilkenny and are looking for suggestions for the best way to get there on public transportation. Any suggestions?
Train to Dublin, bus to Kilkenny. Will be a long day.
The Transport for Ireland travel planner is good for that kind of question- https://www.transportforireland.ie/
You get detailed instructions.
My first and second thoughts were train changing at either Dublin Heuston or Kildare- but when you plan that with Irish Rail, except for twice a day they are quite long connections- https://journeyplanner.irishrail.ie/webapp/?start=1&REQ0JourneyStopsS0A=1&REQ0JourneyStopsS0G=Galway+%28Ceannt%29&REQ0JourneyStopsS0ID=A%3D1%40O%3DGalway+%28Ceannt%29%40X%3D-9047077%40Y%3D53273770%40U%3D80%40L%3D6000047%40B%3D1%40p%3D1715357130%40&HWAI%3DJS%21js=yes&HWAI%3DJS%21ajax=yes&REQ0JourneyStopsZ0A=1&REQ0JourneyStopsZ0G=Kilkenny+%28MacDonagh%29&REQ0JourneyStopsZ0ID=A%3D1%40O%3DKilkenny+%28MacDonagh%29%40X%3D-7244982%40Y%3D52654953%40U%3D80%40L%3D6000051%40B%3D1%40p%3D1715357130%40&journey_mode=single&REQ0JourneyDate=13%2F05%2F2024&REQ0JourneyTime=allday&Number_children=0&Number_students=0&Number_adults=1&language=en_IE#!P|TP!histId|1!histKey|H674927
So TfI generally prefers a long distance bus, changing in Dublin, as almost always being the fastest route.
Personally I would still prefer the train, and live with the long connections, but that is a matter of personal preference- based largely on toilet provisions. They are there on the Galway to Dublin buses, it is the Dublin to Kilkenny leg where it's an open question.
