Best way from Dublin Airport to Tralee

We are doing a hiking trip this August. Trying to decide the best way to get from Dublin Airport to Tralee. I've looked into flying, taking the train and renting a car. (we are experienced driving on the left side, no worries with manual transmission either). We arrive early in Dublin, as long as flights from the US are on time. I realize if we fly, we fly to Kerry airport and would have to taxi or bus to Tralee. Train is a long trip, and we need to get to Tralee the day we arrive in Ireland. Driving looks least expensive, but that's without the insurance fee that I know they will add.

Taking the train would require us getting into Dublin and then 5+ hours of additional travel. Flying would require transport from Kerry airport to Tralee and back, and luggage fees (as we will have backpacks and a suitcase each).

What would you recommend? PM is OK too, or reply on the board.

Looking for opinions - Thanks!

When we did the trek from Dublin to Tralee we took the bus. However we had been in Dublin for 3 days prior. Bus was very inexpensive. The bus stopped at the Cliffs of Mor for a mandatory break for the driver, so that allowed us to hike to the Cliffs.

Most here are of the opinion that driving in a tired and jetlagged state is not a good idea. Driving is really not any faster than the train between the two cities so my suggestion would be to take the train, enjoy the scenery, and do your inevitable napping somewhere other than behind the wheel ... for both your safety and others on the road.
If you'll be needing a car upon arrival in Tralee you can always investigate local hires from there.

Presume the previous post meant to reference Kerry Airport, not Shannon!

Dublin Coach offer services from the airport to Tralee, but I think for the sake of comfort, train would be preferred. Timewise there isn't much difference between the two. You can get a bus or taxi to Heuston Station from the airport and pick up the train there. If you book tickets ahead of time on www.irishrail.ie you will save money vs buying at the station on the day.
