Using our GPS, does anyone have a best route to travel to Dublin from alway that would offer some visual beauty or a stop in a cute town?

It's been many years ago now, but when I drove from Galway to Dublin, I mostly took the motorway (M6) but detoured to see the ruins at Clonmacnoise. I remember enjoying the stop.

We returned to Dublin from Connemara/Galway with a stop in Kildare to visit Irish National Stud, the government owned thoroughbred center. It features beautiful gardens, an interesting tour of the facilities, and a restaurant.
