On our previous trips to Ireland we have always used a rented cell phone from Verizon Wireless. We will be in Ireland for a little over 4 weeks this time so we cannot rent the Verizon phone as they limit the rental to 3 weeks.
Does anyone have some recommendations for a rental cell phone and service in Ireland that has good reception even in the remote areas? We will only be making emergency or absolutely necessary calls. No texts and no data needed.

I've never heard of renting a cell phone.
You can get a prepaid SIM and an Irish phone number and put that in your current phone.
If you're phone isn't compatible with the networks over there, you can either buy a new unlocked phone here before you go or buy one over there.

The people at a Vodafone store can get you set up when you're over there.

It used to be quite popular. But now, it's a very expensive way to go, if you can even find a place to rent one. It's much easier to buy an inexpensive phone once you get there, as Nordheim suggests.
