I'm travelling with my son and 3 of his college colleagues during the 3rd week of August 2017. We're arriving at Shannon and plan to spend first 3 nights based in Galway. Not planning to rent a car. What are the best day trips to both the north (Knock) and south (Burren, Doolin, Moher)? Best to jump on a packaged tour or hire a guide with car?

To your last question, since there are four of you, if you can reserve a driver in a van ("people carrier") that seats 4 passengers, it would probably be fairly affordable and you'd have more flexibility and more personal attention than if you took a package tour. Galway being a university town, businesses of this type will probably do a good job of catering to young adults --and they may be very appreciative that a parent is chaperoning the group.
