Belmullet or Achill?

Our next May Ireland trip is all set EXCEPT for deciding whether to spend two nights in Belmullet and explore the peninsula or two nights on Achill. They both have great walks and views, and we'll get one night of likely trad session music in either place. Both itineraries are preceded by Sligo via Céide Fields, Downpatrick, and Moyne Abbey and followed by Aasleigh Falls on the way to Inishbofin (slight over-simplification), so it's just peninsula versus island.

We like moderate hikes, Neolithic sites, scenery, ruins, and pubs and not particularly interested in posh castles or working abbeys. We own border collies and have lots of raptors around our house. We've been in the area before so other nearby must see/dos have mostly been ticked, although suggestions wouldn't hurt.

Please comment if you can compare them. Telling me how wonderful xxx was doesn't help very much. I only considered Belmullet because it made a list of the "10 most under-visited spots" in the the Irish Times awhile back.

Thanks,

We spent a week on Achill Island several years ago (2009) and it was fantastic. One of my favorite places in Ireland (and there are so many favorites!). We've been to Ireland several times over the years, always trying to find the Next Best Place. Shortly after that trip I was back in the US and happened to mention to a woman from Ireland that we had spent a week on Achill. She was so envious! She said "I'm from Ireland and have never been to Achill and have always wanted to go".

Maybe Belmullet is just as good or even better, but since we haven't been there I can't compare the two. I do know that if you spend your time on Achill you won't be disappointed. Well, you might be disappointed that you didn't spend more time there...

Achill Island has great beaches which I'm sure you and your border collies would love. It also has the highest cliffs in Ireland (Cliffs of Croaghaun - 688 meters) which are also the 2nd highest sea cliffs in Europe. There is a reportedly-challenging and unmarked hike to the cliffs. You can do an online search for more info.

Enjoy your trip. I've never had a trip to Ireland where I didn't discover new awe-inspiring sights or experiences.
