We are in Belfast but wish to travel to Moira for the day to look for ancestors in the cemetery. Any suggestions for getting there (we do not have a car). A city bus runs that way but with several stops, the train route is interrupted for some repairs so you have to switch to a bus. Not sure about cabs or private drivers. Thoughts anyone?
The rail replacement bus from Belfast Grand Central Station to Lisburn only takes 20 minutes non-stop, and runs every 30 minutes off peak, every 10 minutes in the peak. The train from Lisburn to Moira is then an 8 minute journey and departs 10 minutes after the bus arrives.
Don't use the Rail Replacement bus from Belfast Lanyon Place which calls at all intermediate stations en route.
So 38 minutes Belfast Grand Central to Moira every 30 minutes.
The bus 551 (hourly) might be slower at 65 minutes but sets you down in the town centre- Moira Railway Station is very much on the edge of town.
The limited stop Goldliner 250 coach-bus every 3 hours is a lot faster at 35 minutes from Grand Central.
I would book a taxi ahead (if the town is large enough to have a taxi service--might have to go from Lisburn) and negotiate a price for whatever amount of time you think you need to get out to the cemetery, etc., which is probably not on the bus line, and return back to the station. Enjoy!
