Beginning trip on last week of August or first week in September? And other questions.

Greetings all: We are beginning our planning for a 3-4 week trip to Ireland this year. We will likely follow RS's recommended three-week trip by car with some variations. Our research thus far suggests that school starts around the first of September 2016. We are trying to figure out if there are any considerations we should be aware of, if we start our trip in the last week of August instead of the first week of September. Will there be a considerable difference in numbers of visitors, hotel/B&B costs, operating hours, etc.?

Also, we are considering "winging it" in terms of reservations for B&Bs and hotels--with the exception for our first 3 nights in Dublin upon arrival and the last few nights before departure. How difficult will it be to make reservations a day ahead of time or that same afternoon?

Hi Darrell, warm greetings from Ireland.
Speaking as veteran Tour-Guide, there is a considerable difference in the last week in August and the first week in September in term of tourist numbers. September is busy, August is super-busy!
Speaking as a B&B owner, there is also a considerable difference in room price between August and September. August is 'peak-season'. There is roughly a 15-20% difference in my accommodation prices between August and September, I cant speak for all hotels and B&Bs, but you'll generally find a big difference in price between those months.
If you travel in September Id recommend 'winging-it' regarding booking accommodation, more fun that way also.
In August, It'd be risky. Remember theres also 1 million Germans and a million French, Italians and Spanish who also LOVE Ireland in August. Not to mention our former colonial masters on the neighbouring Island who are really coming in huge numbers to my beloved Island once more.
Need any advice, just pop me an email or replay to this post.

I really enjoyed the RS 2 week Ireland tour this past September-first week of October and the crowds were manageable everywhere we went. Ireland's weather is never predicable but we also had the best weather they had all year. Two weeks with half a day of rain. Depending on how flexible your schedule is in September, consider the Dingle Food Festival in late September. Our tour happened to be the one to catch it this year and it was amazing. Tons of food booths, Tom Crean beer truck, and cooking demonstrations. I am a foodie from California and was seriously impressed. Downsides would be that some of the pubs with the best music are really crowded (although with mainly Irish-I had my best cross-cultural exchanges those days) and you would likely need to make a lodging reservation. Despite the festival, the Slea Head drive the day before was not crowded and the Blasket Island Center was still open. I am sure Stephen could give you more details. My other pitch would be to definitely go to Glasnevin Cemetary outside Dublin and take a tour. So much Irish history in a beautiful setting. Have a great trip!

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad I asked. Looks like we will be shooting for an all-September trip.
