Beer app called "Untappd" . Useful in Ireland and Scotland?

I recently discovered this app 4 finding pubs and different brands of beer as well as documenting what you've tried and how you liked it. You also earn different badges depending on what you've drank and where you've been among other criteria.

You can download it onto your phone and it is really cool. Aside from being cool and having the ability to find sometimes out of the way places and unique beers that you might not otherwise find some people probably consider it a beer snob geek thing. but I love it

With us planning a trip to Ireland and Scotland in late May and early June I thought this would be perfect.

Anyone in the UK use this app or anyone that's travel there used it?

My younger son has this app and used it in Europe. I recently downloaded it. It's fun to keep track of the beers and also find out how your friends liked certain brews.

Greetings from Ireland,

Sounds like a cool app, though of course finding a pub in Ireland certainly doesn't require an app! They are everywhere, thank God!

Keeping a track of the different beers is sweet though, no pun intended, these days heres an abundance of good micro-breweries in Ireland, it isn't all Guinness and Guinness-woened products anymore. A welcome development

Best wishes on your journeys

Ok. an update on this beer app. Due to my competitive nature and OCD....I've now become a full blown raging alcoholic.

Good app I guess!!

I have been an Untapped user for several years, mainly just to record different beers and different venues, not to record the many repeats. I have used it in London, Germany, Czech Republic, and Spain; all with very good luck. Some observations....

  • I am constantly amazed at the number of beers in the app, rarely is a bottled beer not in there, and nearly all Micro-brews have been in there. What you might not find is for example some standard Porter that they then aged in whisky barrels or added some flavoring to that they only made a couple kegs of. Finding the correct beer can sometimes be a problem, there can be many variations on one and the brewery name may be a legal name, not the name you think.
  • The app uses FourSquare for venue locations, so nearly all bars/pubs have been in there.
  • The App is handy for searching "Nearby" and seeing what is being served and where.
  • The only downside for European travel is that you need data or wi-fi to use the app and locations work best when you are there, not a day later a hundred miles away. I had a Sim card for most trips, so not a problem, in Spain it was a bit harder to keep up with logging beers since I did not always have Wi-Fi.

But overall, I love the app, at over 2200 unique beers and adding all the time.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was looking for. I was hoping that was the case in other countries. I wish I would have had this app the other times we've been traveling abroad. I could have had some really cool beers logged in Spain, portugal and Germany and all over the Caribbean.

I've got Verizon cell service and for $40 you can get a little bit of data, I think 100mb so if I can't get Wi-Fi in a pub I may just go ahead and try using my data and see how much that uses just to check in.

I haven't used Untappd in Ireland but I have in Hungary, Slovenia, etc. I enjoyed getting new badges and keeping track of the beers I tried. If I didn't have wifi at the time I either took a picture or added a note in my phone. I'm looking forward to trying some new beers in Ireland this summer!
