Beautiful scenery and small towns to visit heading from Cliffs of Moher back to Dublin?

You folks have been so helpful so far, so thought I'd throw out my current conundrum: 2 days to wander back to Dublin from the Cliffs of Moher and what to do with them. We will have already seen Kerry and Dingle rings, so lots of coastline. We are interested in the "middle" of the country, as well, and particularly in simply seeing the beauty of it and getting a feel for the people and culture.

Would you mind throwing out some ideas as to where to stay and where to visit as we wind our way back to Dublin?

Many thanks!

Hi Doc - if it were me, I'd stay in Glendalough and visit the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Stunning!

Are you already including the Irish National Stud on your to-do list? Assuming from your screen name that you have an interest in horses, I'd think this would be a top priority for you.

The town of Athlone on Lough Ree would be another destination that's right on the main route, with lots to see and do.

Thanks to you both! Yes, the National Stud is a possibility, altho I did that kind of work for a career. We are staying near there our first night in Ireland, so will try to work that in.

Glendalough sounds terrific! Again, thanks to you both - much appreciated input!

I would second the Athlone suggestion as it has a castle on the river with an interesting history as it was in a very strategic location. Also, Clonmacnoise is nearby and well worth a visit.
