My husband and I are headed to Ireland mid August. We land early in the morning in Shannon, will get our rental car and drive up to the Cliffs of Moher. From what I'm reading this is their busy season and sometimes the Cliffs are "closed" until 4pm when it becomes less busy. What would be a good back up plan in case we decide to wait until 4 to visit the Cliffs? We are spending the night in Lisdoonvarna but can't check in until 3. We will leave the next morning to drive to Dingle. Thank you!
Could spend a couple of hours up at The Burren http://www.burrennationalpark.ie/ to stretch your legs a bit after your long flight.
If it's a sunny day you could also drive the coastal route thru Kilrush and Kilkee. There are some very pretty coastal views, and the cliff walk at Kilkee would make for a pleasant interlude on your way up to the Cliffs.
Other than the Burren, there isn't much around the cliffs. Personally, I felt the Burren was only nominally interesting.
I enjoyed the Burren but had a local guide (RS Tour) and that was helpful. The day I was there the Cliffs were completely fogged in so perhaps I liked the Burren because it was actually visible, lol.
Thank you so much for the suggestions! I really appreciate it!
Depending on the weather and your timing perhaps you could go see an interesting portal tomb, Poulnabrone Dolmen, or have an afternoon drink in Doolin? One is east of your evening's destination and one is west.
We found the Burren fascinating. We stopped at Poulnabrone Dolmen, also great, and hiked around a bit in the interesting terrain.
