around Shannon Airport . . .

I was planning on driving up from Dingle for a 7:00 AM flight the next day. I'm having to drop of the rental car the evening before because it's not open early enough the next day, so I was thinking of getting an AirBnB close by and taking a taxi to and from the airport. Having never been in the Shannon area, is getting a cab there an option? Not much info in Rick's Guide book. (also, anything to do in the evening?)

thanks

Hey Warren,

Try staying at Grey Gables B & B in Ennis. It's very close to Shannon airport and Ennis is a charming town.

Another option is the town of Limerick. There are plenty of Airbnbs there. For an evening outing, you can visit Bunratty Castle - actually quite enjoyable - and top off your visit with a drink or two at Durty Nelly's pub. There should be good bus service to Bunratty and Shannon airport from Limerick. Limerick also has a train station.

We stayed at the Bunratty Castle Hotel (it is NOT a castle...more like a nicer Holiday Inn or Hampton, but it is located right outside the Bunratty Folk Park/Castle. You can walk as in 1 minute to Dirty Nelly's and another pub right next door to it. There is a little local shopping in the immediate area.

It was SUPER EASY to catch an early-morning cab, and the hotel staff arranged it. Several others were catching early cabs that morning.

What was so funny is that we arrived at the Shannon Airport in the however many hours ahead the airline recommended, and not a soul was at the security checkpoints yet. We inquired and we were told the lads would be along later. We could have slept a bit later....but maybe it was just that particular day. Once the security guys arrived, it was an easy process. And, you likely know you clear US Customs there in Shannon, which makes US arrival more streamlined.

Have fun. Definitely do not try to drive from Dingle the day you depart...good plan to get more closely positioned and the car checked in the day prior.
The Bunratty Folk Park is actually cute and a pleasant place to visit......sort of a glimpse at what Ireland would have been like in the late 1800s/early 1900s. We went also thru the castle itself, but did not do the banquet there.
