I've scheduled the ferry tour from Galway to Aran Islands past the Cliffs of Moher and back to Galway. During the 4 1/2 hours on Inishmore, what are suggested things to do? What are the suggested ways to experience it, given this timeline?
To Do: walk, bike or get a van to the fort; enjoy the old Irish ambience, eat some Seafood Chowder. I enjoyed spending the night at a B&B there and having good food and Great music at a nearby pub.
Down near the airport are Teampall Bheanáin, Saint Eany's Round Tower, Caisleán Aircín, and Altóir Colmcille.
To the north are Dún Aonghasa, St Ciaran's Church and Holy Well, Na Seacht dTeampaill, Clochan na Carraige, Dún Eochla, and Dún Dúchathair. We tried to get to all of them by bicycle, but the island is bigger than you think, so I'd recommend an e-bike. You'd probably need a two night stay to catch everything. We were there for about 27 hours.
Then there are lots of donkeys to talk with and great views if you get good weather. If the weather is terrible, just get a van ride to Dún Aonghasa and spend the rest of the day in the pub.
Sorry I didn't notice the 4 1/2 hours part on first reading. There are pony traps and vans awaiting you at the foot of town (near the ferry landing), which are probably the best way to see the most in such a limited time. Not sure if you need to reserve,
Thanks - I've already got my Galway hotels booked, so I'll just have the 4.5 hours to explore. E-bike may be the way to go for me.
Do you need to book the e bike in advance? If so can you send the link ? We are planning to do,the same in June.
Be prepared for rain - possibly heavy rain.
Whether by e-bike or van tour, be sure to see Dun Aengus. There’s a big bike parking lot pollution front of the tiny visitor center/ticket booth, and it’s a 10-15 minute hike from there up to the ancient fort, with an amazing view.
There’s also the Wormhole, a fascinating geological/ocean tide feature, but it takes some time and route finding to reach it. Our van driver took us there on foot.
It would be easy to use up the four hours on the island. Rent a bike when you get there and explore the island. There are two easy roads to bike: low road and high road. Then there is a most westerly path that we took that takes a bit longer but absolutely gorgeous as it takes you high into the “mountain” with great views. If you do not opt for that, take the high road in and the low road back. Absolutely stop at Dun Aengus for a visit (all the roads end up at the base of the site). Before heading back home, return your bike, and grab food/beverage in the main village.
