Aer Lingus…how strictly enforced is their personal item carry on size?

The website mentions maximum size of 10”High X 13” Wide X 8” Deep for international travel. My laptop backpack is 16” High X 10” Wide X 7.5” Deep, however my plan is not to fill it completely as it could be squished down to fit their regulation size.
Has anyone experienced this with their personal item carry on size exceeding the restrictions on Aer Lingus international flights from US to Dublin? If so, how was it handled?

The Aer Lingus counter was just next to my Delta counter when I was at CDG in August. From what I observed while waiting in line, they were being quite strict. I don't know the penalty, but I did get the impression that they were not amused with oversized cartyons. This was not a flight to the US, so your experience might be different.

My philosophy that I used as an attorney and when traveling is this: Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

The worst is that they will not accept it so I would not even try, considering that they might make you pay a hefty fee to check it. Why not just follow the rules?

The only time I flew Aer Lingus, they were strictly enforcing the weight limit. (We didn't have to put our bags in the sizer). My husband had put his coat in his RS backpack and it was barely over. I turned to him and said "you were supposed to wear the coat". He took it out put it on, and we were good. Every time I have flown, they have been more interested in weight (unless the bag is obviously too big). Once in Toronto, his bag wouldn't fit under the plastic shield at the security (which meant it was not allowed). He showed them it had a lot of air in it. They let him push it down and it went through. That should work for you (although no guarantee)

We flew Aer Lingus in August from SFO. Knowing that we might be on the cusp of having our bags be too big/heavy we checked our bags. I observed while waiting at the gate that the sizers and scale were not in use. When passengers got off the plane we were taking there were quite a few people with bags at least as big as ours. Still, I personally wouldn’t take a chance.

I always assume that all airlines enforce their regulations to the full extent that way there are no surprises at check-in.

As questioned above "Why not comply"

Thank you everyone for your responses.
I have a medical issue with my back and the backpack
fits me just right. It also has the perfect amount of compartments which keep me very organized.
I’m hoping to find a smaller version of it with the sane comfort level!

Hey if it's a medical issue, get a signed affidavit from your doctor stating same and forward it to Aer Lingus before you fly and get a waiver from them to carry-on.

I would caution that whatever others may have experienced - may be irrelevant to what you may. Whenever I have pushed the limits. I always try to have a fall-back plan. Such rules and regulations are not always be enforced to the same standards - even on the same day - at the same airport.

My personal item is a soft tote 15.75"L x 11.25"H x 8.25"D stuffed full every trip and it has NEVER not fit under a seat. I have flown Aer Lingus LAX-Dublin and back and no one in any boarding situation (Domestic and International and Inter-Europe) has even batted an eye. I really think they are looking for obvious abusers with huge bags. I did see people stopped boarding Dublin-LAX but I don't know if it was for too many bags, too big...because I just mind my own business and keep walking,
