Aer Lingus ATR Flight - Hadrian Wall Planning

Hi everyone. A group of us are flying from ORD and MSP next May for a week on Hadrian’s Wall. I am flying Aer Lingus which I’ve had great experience with before, but taking the regional Emerald ATR into Newcastle will be new for me. I had planned to do carry on only for this trip, to avoid checking / carousel wait. My ticket does include checked bag, I just prefer shorter trips with carry on. I have bags that fit their standards for carry on, so I was not overly concerned.

I cannot find a clear answer on this. I know the ATR locker will be smaller. If my bag is collected at the gate to NCL or when I depart NCL, does that bag get checked thru or will I be able to collect it plane side on landing? I think back to flying Horizon as a kid into Lewiston and always could collect it plane side.

Thanks for any insight or experience on the ATR connections with Aer Lingus.

Thank you Frank and Carol. I had hoped it would be plane-side for simplicity. Carol, I will definitely take a look at your recommendation as well. I am fortunate this go-around, my fellow hikers are former co-workers who have all recently retired, and they’re handling most of the logistics on arrival. I don’t mind a hand off for this short venture.

I think what you’re asking is what happens to your bag if the overhead lockers are full and you have to check your bag at the gate.

If this happens your luggage will go to the carousel with the other checked luggage and be retrieved there.

It’s annoying when this happens!

No, the overheads on a turboprop cannot handle a full size carry ons. They will be gate checked at the door to the plane and returned there when you arrive.

This was my experience.

No personal experience but found these 'reviews', and I see nothing that shows a plane side cart to put bags on for plane side retrieval at the destination. ( Perhaps things have changed since these videos were made?)

I too flew Horizon when it used trubo-prop ( Q-400) and had the plane side cart for the bags too big to fit in the mall overhead bins.
Great solution in my mind.

Seems Aer Lingus has other thoughts on that situation

Let us know what happens.

Does it matter, and if so, why?

Newcastle is only a small airport; you won't have to wait long for your bag if it's on the carousel.
