Advise for 35th anniversary trip to Ireland

We are planning trip to Ireland to celebrate 35th in late September - early October. Struggling with decision between independent travel and the 14 day Rick Steve's tour. We have not taken a tour before having always traveled in Europe on our own. The tour price seems very expensive. Is it worth the money or should we do our on thing. All opinions welcomed, thanks!

If you are willing to drive, there is no easier place to do it yourself than Ireland. There is no real language barrier, the people are great. If you stay in B&Bs, the hosts are a wealth of information about the area, things to see and do, where to eat. You can be on your own schedule and follow your own interests. On my first trip to Ireland we had an air/car/B&B package from Sceptre Tours. We made our own itinerary and chose our own lodging, but it was all paid for upfront. That might be an option for you, too.

Our family of 4 - all adults - did independent travel for 8 days in Dublin, Doolin and Clifden with several day trips. I did watch several of Rick Steve's videos on Ireland to decide where I wanted to spend our time. One you-tube video had one of his tour guides entertaining attendees on what to expect on a Rick Steve's tour in Ireland. Especially if you plan to drive and have previously enjoyed independent travel - Ireland is easy to get around with amazing historic and geographic sites.

Agree with both. Like Nancy, our first time there quite a few years ago, maybe ten or more, can't remember, we also used Sceptre Tours. You can look at their website. It was an independent vacation, car, airfare via Aer Lingus and a set of vouchers we used at B&B's. It was all paid up front and included a book that listed many, many B&B's. It was much cheaper than doing it ourselves. Haven't used them since as I now use airline passes. If you do this on your own, suggest you fly into Shannon and then you can do a circle around the island and come home from Shannon or into Shannon and home from Dublin on open jaw ticket. It is easier to get used to driving starting in Shannon. Get an automatic car for ease of driving, for us it is easier. Also get the CDW. We always stay at B&B places. You can call the Irish tourist bureau or board, not sure of exact name but they have office in NYC with toll free number from their website and they will send you a lot of helpful info. You are going at a great time of year. Good luck.
