Advice for one week itinerary West coast + Dublin

Hello,

My girlfriend and I will travel to Ireland from August 10th to 17th. Our arrival flight is late evening on Shannon airport and our departure flight early morning from Dublin.

Basically, we are thinking to rent a car for the first 4 days and do some sightseeing in western Ireland and then drop off the car and stay in Dublin the last days.

Is it the first visit to Ireland for both of us and we would like to see the most picturesque landscapes on the western coast, 2-3 nice and well kept castles and a few typical Irish towns. We are planning to stay in B&Bs / inns / guesthouses, so that we can feel a bit more the local colors.

From what we know about Ireland so far, we were thinking about including some of the following: Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry or Dingle Peninsula, Galway.

In Dublin we were mainly planning to see Trinity College, Guinness Storehouse, Kilmainham Gaol and Dublin Castle.

I am especially very much looking forward to a few evenings with live Irish music in local pubs - I am not sure if the Temple Bar area is too touristy for the real deal or is it ok? Are there live music pubs in smaller towns as well?

We would really appreciate any reccomendations and inside tips about the best / most convenient places to stay and best places to visit.

Thank you

Adrian

There have been a number of threads on Trad Music. Here's a fairly recent one discussing the music scene in Dublin: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/ireland/best-pubs-in-dublin-for-food-and-traditional-irish-music. Use the search bar at the top of the screen to find others. I believe the RS Ireland book discusses trad music and my understanding is that there is a fair amount of trad music in Dingle town.

A little more information on your interests may help people assist you with ideas on what else to see and do. More information on your budget might help with where to stay.

We stayed at The Old Ground Hotel in Ennis our last night before flying out of Shannon, cute town, you may want to consider it for your first night since you arrive late. I believe it was less than a half hour from the airport. We also liked the Cloisters in Kinsale and Sallyport in Kenmare (both small B&Bs).

Hello,

I sketched the following plan, can you please let me know if it seems doable and if it could be improved?

Day 1: evening arrival on Shannon Airport and accommodation in Ennis.

Day 2: Cliffs of Moher - short cruise from Doolin - up the coast drive to Galway, accommodation in Galway 2 nights.

Day 3: exploring Galway and maybe a short side trip outside Galway.

Day 4: Galway - Kylemore Abbey - driving south to Bunratty Castle - Adare - Dingle, accommodation in Dingle.

Day 5: Dingle - Slea Head Drive - driving East to Dublin - car drop off in Dublin, accommodation in Dublin 3 nights.

Days 6 and 7: exploring Dublin and visits to Bru na Boinne and Glendalough.

Day 8: departure flight at noon.

How does this sound? Would you change anything to the itinerary or accommodation places?

Many thanks!

If you stay over in Ennis, the Grey Gables B&B is very nice, conveniently located, and relatively inexpensive.
The Poet's Corner Pub in the Old Ground hotel in Ennis is a center for local trad music there.

If you have time, I found staying overnight in Doolin delightful. There is a very active trad music scene in 3 pubs there. There are many places to stay that feel like you are in the countryside. One end of the cliffs of Moher cliffwalk is in Doolin as is a ferry to the Aran Islands.

While in Galway, a day or part-day trip into the Connemara region is great for scenery.

Enjoy!

There are loads of things to do in Dublin and it's quite a small city too, so, you can see a few things in one day with relative ease.

For example, it's very viable to see Dublin Castle, Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College and Temple Bar in one day.

As for the west coast, Co. Clare has a lot to offer. You could see some great sights in a day or two, e.g. The Cliffs of Moher, the Ailwee Caves, Doolin Caves (I highly recommend) and Bunratty Castle.

Day 4 will involve a lot of driving. Not that's it's not doable, but I would get an early start. We were staying in Roundstone on the coast east of Galway City, and I recall it taking us much longer than expected to get from there to Kylemore Abbey. Once there, you can walk through the Abbey, and stroll around the grounds. I would figure on your entire morning for that. The rest you can accomplish in the afternoon.
Roundstone is a small village on the coast and could be worthy of consideration for one of you day trips from Galway City.
Your day trips from Dublin sound like good ones.

Enjoy!

Edited to add: Check out the post "Best way to see Bru na Boinne." It seems the Visitors' Center is closed for a while. I have read many good reviews of the tour mentioned, but you may have to act fast to get tickets.
