Addresses and Directions

I realize this sounds a little silly but how do addresses work in Dublin. We have a few addresses that don't have street numbers. They are just what would appear to be street names. Is there a different system there than what is in the U.S.?

I apologize if this seems like a really dumb question, this is the first time out of the country for me.

Thank you,
Steph

Ireland is the only EU country that doesn't have a postal code. So, yes, addresses are different. Numbers may or may not be used. As noted in Wikipedia, Rural addresses are specified by the county, nearest post town, and the townland. Urban addresses are specified by county, city or town name, street name, house number, and apartment or flat number where relevant. A house name may be used instead of a number.

I guess my question is, if a house just has a house name...how do you know you have arrived at the right place?

The street address situation can be enough to drive one around the bend. If you look carefully at the web sites, you will find that some places include their latitude and longitude, and I have ended up using that information and our GPS to find places. It does not help when a street changes its name four times in barely a mile either. Since we travel by car we have a GPS with a European card and has been really handy a few times. Otherwise my recommendation would be to contact the places in question and ask for specific information. At times like these, the Internet is a real blessing. It is unfortunate but there are places that assume that the rest of the world has all the acquired local knowledge needed to find them.

Contact the property owner, by phone or email and have them give you exact directions to their location. Are they across the street from a park? A pub? A cafe? A bus stop? Is this a B and B? Ask them what color is the door? You'll love the colored doors of Dublin. If it's a hotel and you take a taxi they'll find it.
