A planner who loves to plan surprised by a non-plan trip

I have heard the phrase it just fell into my lap, however I’m currently doing just that, surprise! We enjoy travel with the kids even though the general advice is to not take children to Europe we always just ignored that because it’s been amazing every time. Recently we were given an opportunity to travel as a couple overseas this summer and in our disbelief and excitement booked a flight in/out of Dublin for one week, so 5 actual days. Been to Europe and the UK lots, but never to Ireland. For some reason the choices seem overwhelming and I’m having difficulty deciding what to do when. Here’s the plan so far: arrive in Dublin and get some lunch, early check in to hotel. That’s what I’ve got so far. No car. For those who have been to Dublin and Ireland recently is there anything that stands out as memorable either as a positive or negative? What would you do again? Anything you would have done differently? There are so many “must see” experiences from things in Dublin to day trips to other locations. Any information is appreciated for this last minute trip. Thanks!

I would take at one or two day tours. There are many available. Cliffs of Moher, or the neolithic sites north of Dublin come to mind. Lots to enjoy in Dublin. Really enjoyed the Archaeological museum. Lots of other stuff to see depending on what your interests are....beer, Natural History museum, religion, post office, etc.

I agree with Susan E. Day tours are a great idea.

You could also take a day trip to Belfast.

If you want to visit the Kilmainham Gaol, which I suggest, you need to make reservations in advance. Way in advance.

You could spend two days just in Dublin to see the main sights such as Killmainham Jail, a couple museums, the Book of Kells, and just wander the Temple Bar area and Grafton St. Then use your other days for day trips to Newgrange, Glendalough, or either Belfast or Kilkenny by train. This would give you quite a variety for a short stay.

I would choose Giants Causeway over Cliffs of Moher, but definitely do one "natural beauty" tour like this or Ring of Kerry (which is bound to be a very long day). Folks on here recommend https://www.paddywagontours.com. You need to book nearly everything in advance. Depending on your dates, you might not have every choice available to you. I enjoyed EPIC, the emigration museum, but I visited it at a very un-busy time. I'm not sure I'd have liked it if I had to book an entry time (which you do in summer).
