9 days on the ground - Dublin and (fill in the blank)

We are thinking on spending 9 days in Ireland late August or early September. So, besides Dublin, what other sites not in Dublin do you recommend and what other towns/cities would you recommend for a 3 night stay? I would like to hear your reasons for your suggestions.
I know RS has a few suggestions but I have learned that many times his taste does not match mine.

Thanks in advance

Edited: would like to use public transportation.

So what are your tastes?

Belfast if you want another major city with a different take on history. Galway if you want a base for exploring the scenic west coast, preferably with a car.

Trotter - What we don't want to do is see multiple churches or art museums. If we see more than 2 each they tend to run together and can't remember uniqueness. We are not interested in ruins of castles or hikes through the countryside. Hope that narrows it down a little.

Dick - Thanks for the suggestion but my wife wanted to stay away from just hitting 2 big cities and no smaller towns.

Thanks

Dingle simply to enjoy the coast and the people. Nice pint at Foxy John’s Hardware.

Definitely see NewGrange. Older than pyramids.

Killarney National Park. I drove the Gap of Dunloe on a November day to get to Killarney. Best day of travel anywhere. Other than sheep, couple of lorries, 1 biker, 1 trap and a few hikers had the Gap
Of Dunloe to myself. Beautiful Fall colors. Blue skies but with dark ominous rain clouds looming in the distance.

I also loved Kinsale.

I also liked Kenmare. Great foody town. Finn's Farmcut being the best (IMHO). If you go, make reservations several days in advance. Although you said you aren't into castle ruins, there is the old Charles Fort which provides military history and has some fantastic views. There's also the scenery surrounding Old Head which is the nearest point to where the Lusitania was sunk. From Kinsale you can take the ferry to Cobh, another seaside town with historical ties to the Titanic and Irish emigration.

If the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula are both of interest I would stay in Glenbeigh, on the north side of the Ring of Kerry. It would give you access to both scenic areas as well as Killarney National Park, as described by Claudia.
