8 Days in Ireland Itinerary suggestions

Hello--
We will arrive in Dublin on May 24 and depart June 1.
Our plan is to spend the first night in Dublin then take a train to Galway. Then we'd like to work our way up driving to somewhere between Donegal/Letterkenny to see where my family is from. Then we'd like to go back to Dublin by train and spend 2-3 days seeing Trinity, Killmainhamm, National Museum and . . . ? Does this sound like a realistic timeframe? What suggestions does anyone have for our Galway-Donegal leg in terms of places to see, a possible overnight, traditional music? We're empty nesters so just us grownups. Thanks!

I'll be travelling one week later than you. But renting a car, spending first day exploring in Dublin, next exploring Meath, then on to Belfast, Bushmills, and Donegal. Last day will be a leisurely drive from Donegal town to hotel 20 mins from Dublin airport. Doing a mix of Hostels, Hotels, and AirBnB for lodgings.
If I had planned better, I would have considered flying from Dublin to Donegal, and then renting a car and doing the trip in reverse, ending in Dublin area.

The flight via Aer Lingus from Dublin to Donegal is short and reasonably priced.
