50 years of Aer Lingus Air Travel

In Oct 1973, my wife and I were married. We went to Ireland for a Honeymoon. The priest who married us was also traveling there 2 days later. We met up at the Cliffs of Moher. We flew on Aer-Lingus 747 JFK-SNN (the latter was a major European hub then; there was no Dublin airport to speak of). Our flight - Economy, for both of us was $479 ! We were served today's First Class dinners on linen tablecloth and flatware (we still have it). The we got a series of snacks, multiple beverage carts, hot towels before landing, a full Irish breakfast. The Economy seats were spacious.

On our 50th wedding Anniversary we are flying Aer Lingus A321neo Business class outbound only with about the same 1973 percs. on the outbound leg only (PHL-DUB).Cost for Business out-Economy In- over $3500.

I've been to Ireland five times, but never flew Aer Lingus. They're too expensive.

Unbelievably, my most memorable flight was aboard Aeroflot, the Russian airline, in 1997 to Shannon. That year Aeroflot initiated international service from Chicago 's Midway Airport, which had previously serviced only domestic flights. My ticket was only $502. All the other airlines charged $1,200 - $1,500. The plane went next to Moscow.

As far as the service, Aeroflot provided full meal service, all the alcohol I would have wanted and a new, comfortable airplane.

First (and I mean that in more ways than one!), congratulations on your upcoming anniversary. Imagine Shannon. being the major hub - we went thru there 3 days ago and it didn’t seem like a huge international gateway, except maybe for the huge duty-free shop at the end of Security that couldn’t be avoided while we tried to get to the waiting area. That was extremely annoying, but so be it.

I have to ask - silverware - was it expected that passengers would keep theirs as souvenirs? Glad that you still have yours - is it actual silver? And the Full Irish - did that include Black Pudding?

The Aer Lingus crew this week were friendly and professional. They wheeled the snack trolley down the aisle, and most passengers (but not us) bought a snack bag or cylinder (or both!) of potato chips. and maybe a beverage. Regardless of how cheap the plane ticket might have been, there were countless ways of paying for this and that onboard, if desired. The working seatbelts and tray tables were free, though. Plane was late arriving into Shannon that we would be taking out to London, so the clean-up prior to letting us board was short and incomplete. Hopefully you won’t have the previous passenger’s plastic bottle left on the side of your seat, like I had.

May your upcoming trip be nothing but wonderful. Are you driving once you arrive? Any particular sights or activities on your agenda? Slán leat!
