I'm looking for one last location to stop for a couple of days before finishing a trip in Dublin. Considering Carlingford to the north but would appreciate any input as to places to consider between Galway and Dublin. Wherever that location may be, it doesn't have to be a "touristy" place, preference would be real Ireland, and we have no problem driving during the day...just looking for a nice place between the two points to call "home" for a couple of nights. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...thank you!
We spent 2 nights in Birr between Dublin and Galway as we were swinging by Shannon airport to pick up family members. Birr is almost half way between the coasts. We chose Birr for the above reasons and because it allowed us to easily drive to Clonmacnoise as a day trip and some other historic sites. We were near peat bogs and whisky tasting distilleries too. Birr definitely isn't a tourist town but it had a fascinating castle, grounds and science museum at the end of our street. There were a couple of nice restaurants near the castle wall where we ate of an evening. Our B&B was a former stable within rock throwing distance of the castle wall. It had a spectacular breakfast room, tea room, cafe and shopping. It was a 6 room B&B and the first night we were there, we were the only guests. All of the doors were open so we could go explore the beautiful, uniquely decorated rooms. I'd stay there again as a half way point. We stayed in Birr in June of 2017.
