We will be arriving in Dublin for one day on cruise ship , not sure whether to spend the day in Dublin or take a day tour
to Powerscourt House and Gardens and Glendalough or Boyne Valley.
If you stay in the city, you'll probably see a greater variety of attractions. The Boyne Valley is very interesting, but takes most of the day; either www.newgrangetours.com or www.overthetoptours.com are recommended in our guidebook.
Hi There,
Both are good options. Personally, I prefer Glendalough and Powerscourt. You would get a mix of everything on the tour - the gardens, the coast, and the Wicklow Mountains. Glendalough is beautiful, and the gardens in Powerscourt are very special. Check out https://www.dublinsightseeing.ie/southcoast.aspx for a tour which leaves Dublin at 10.30. Not sure if this is suitable for you arriving on a cruise but it should be.
Enjoy the travels.

Hello! I'm an American living in Waterville on the Ring of Kerry. Hope this helps:
You're probably going into Dun Laoghaire harbour - that's where most of the cruise ships dock. It's a great little town in it's own right. http://www.dunlaoghaire.ie/ But do confirm that - some might dock at Dublin Port, too. I've taken the ferry in and out of Dublin Port about 30 times and never noticed a "nice" cruise ship!
I remember the first time I went to Glendalough -- I couldn't believe how special a place it is. See a photo http://goo.gl/BdPjr3 My host dropped me off and said "I'll pick you up in 7 hours!" and I enjoyed every minute! You could spend the entire time walking around the park - there are various walks from short to hours and hours, some trails dirt, some wooden walkways covering miles over bog surrounded by purple heather (see photo here http://goo.gl/gJOwkY). If you're into walking, it's awesome!
A bus tour doesn't give you much time to view the area - check Bus Eireann for local buses that might take you there with more time to enjoy it! (www.buseireann.ie)
For others reading this post that might not be rushing to get onto a cruise ship, check out this bus company's time table:

Powerscourt is pretty spectacular in a totally different way: it's grand!
Enjoy!
We spent one day in Dublin last July off a cruise ship. We (4 adults) hired a private guide through toursbylocal.com. We were picked up and dropped off at the pier. We saw Kilmainham Goal, Guinness Storehouse ( had reservations), St. Patrick's, passed through Trinity University, ate fish n chips at Leo Burdock's (would make another trip just to eat there again), stopped at Dublin Castle, and still had 1 hour to do a little shopping on Grafton Street. Our guide drove us around, waited while we toured, and gave us many facts and information about Dublin/Ireland. It was one of our best days off the ship. We paid $350.00 for 6 hours. Used the same company in Edinburgh, another great day. We took Celebrity's British isles cruise. If you want info on any of the other ports, let me know.
Barbara - thanks for that tip on Fish & Chips in Dublin! We're going next weekend to see Gilbert O'Sullivan perform at St. Patrick's Cathedral! We'll try to make it to your recommendation!
