Where and how long to stay on Snaefellsness Peninsula

My husband and I will be spending 10 full days (11 nights) in Iceland in late May. First night in Selfoss, second night in Borgarnes.
Does that sound like enough time to see the sites in the Golden Circle? Or should we spend our second night closer in to Thingvellir Park?

The next 5 nights we plan to be on the Snaefellsness Peninsula. We are thinking of staying 2-3 nights in Grundarfjordur or Stykkisholmur and the remainder of the time in Arnaestapi or Olafsvic. Any recommendations or thoughts on those or any other possible spots for staying?
We are avid and experienced hikers. Are there enough hikes and sites to see to warrant spending 4 full days there?
The rest of the trip is already set at a horse farm a bit NE of Borgarnes, then Reykjavík for our last night before flying home.
We appreciate any recommendations and/or advice. Thanks!

Coming from the US on an overnight flight, I would not recommend staying in Selfoss the night of arrival. Stay in Reykjavik and keep the driving to a minimum for safetys sake.

One day for the Golden Circle is ample.

Five nights on Snaefellsness is a lot. I adore this area, but I would cut this back to say 3 nights and then take the extra nights and see more of the south coast, including Thorsmark for hiking. The hiking there is fabulous!!! I highly recommend staying at the Volcano Huts for at least one night, if not two, for hiking around on your own. We stayed in the little cottages and it was perfect for us.

You could also add a night on Westmann Island. The puffins will be there, and you can hike up Eldfell and then the museum at the base of that is not to be missed IMO. The rib boat safari ride is a blast! We had a pod of orcas come up to us and it wasn't even a whale watching excursion.
