Where exactly are you talking? The Westfjords, or Snaefellsness, etc? That makes a big difference.
The only time we have used a guide was up in the Westfjords at Hornstrandir, but most of those end by the end of August or early September. As for hiking the rest of the country, we have never used a guide as we go on our own, so I can't help with that. If you have a car, have you considered just going yourself?
