West Iceland - where to stay/things to do and see

My husband and I with two adult children will arrive Aug 11 (children coming from usa/we will come from Europe) late afternoon of 11th. Husband/son have been twice before to Iceland to hike/find waterfalls, both times to southern coast area. We were considering heading towards West Iceland area before more family arrive later in week but were hesitant for lack of knowledge of places to stay/things to see and do (like to hike, explore) in the area. Would have 2-3 days to explore this area before meeting back up with inbound from USA travelers on 14th/15th. Suggestions for places to stay? Waterfalls/hiking trails?

Yes, Snaefellsness is a wonderful area to explore. So much to see and do! The issue will be finding lodging at this late date since most places book up 9-12 months in advance. I would stay in Stikkisholmur, Grundarfjordur or Arnastapi and then you can base from any of these quite easily.

In Stikkisholmur, two places that we have had great stays are the Akkeri Guesthouse and Hotel Eglisen.

On Snaefellsness here are some a few of the places we like. Ytri Tunga (seal beach) Budri, the walk between Arnastapi and Hellnar (45 minutes each way, great cafe in Hellnar right at the trail), Helgafell (cash only, 450 kr pp), kayaking at Grundarfjordur, Hellissandur for the murals, Raudfeldsfja, Djupalonssandur Beach, Vatnshellir Cave, Malarrif, Take route 570 up tp Snaefellsjokull Glacier (definitely want a 4x4 with good clearance for this road)and Songhellir Cave, Svodufoss, and of course Kirkjufell. There are more places that will catch your eye, so stop at whatever looks good.
