Walking to Igloo South

Hi there, I will be visiting in December for my honeymoon. Unfortunately I don't have a car licence and will take a bus fro Reykjavik to Hella.

Heres the crazy part, I plan to walk from Hella all the way to the Igloo. Sounds crazy I know. Taxi is out of the question as it is too expensive.

Has anyone done this before? To the locals, does this sound crazy?

It looks like the Aurora Igloos are just a little over a mile west of the western edge of Hella, which isn’t like an expeditionary trek. December, however, could be a lot snowier walk than it would be in warmer months, and rolling a suitcase through a mile’s worth of snow would require some effort. How much luggage will you have for your honeymoon, and can you carry it with a shoulder strap, or backpack-style? If you’re walking the roads, maybe they’ll be clear, or plowed, or snowy or icy.

If you’re up for the walk, and have footwear with acceptable traction, and dressed for the potentially wintry weather, I don’t see why it couldn’t be done. Locals should appreciate your solution to not being able to drive yourself, and not being able to have an affordable taxi. Even if they would think you’re crazy, you’re there as a guest, and spending money, so I think you’ll be welcome. On the roads, do be alert for black ice. On our Iceland trip (April), we were driving, and hit a patch of it. My husband was able to stay in control, but a car coming the other direction didn’t, and flipped off the road. One of its passengers was killed. If you’ll be there in the dark, you’ll need a headlamp, and/or flashing bicycle light, and/or wearing something reflective - something to let drivers know you’re there, on the road.

Will your spouse be walking, too? How does all that affect the honeymoon? Even if expensive, a taxi for two is a better deal than a taxi for one -
twice as good!

Does the Aurora Igloo company have any better suggestions, or can they arrange something reasonable to make sure you arrive safe and sound?

On your walk, it looks like you’d be passing the American Schoolbus Café - a cafe in a big, yellow School Bus. Interesting idea.

Oh … when you’re done at the Aurora Igloo South, how are you getting to your next destination?

Hi thank you for the lengthy reply. I will take note of all advice you have given.

For more context I will be staying at Reyjavik for 10 days in an Airbnb and leave the luggages there. So its only a one day trip to the igloo.

My fiance is the one who say we should just walk there haha. She is more braver than me. She say this is part of the honeymoon we will likely never forget.

That being said, we will return back to Reykjavik the same way we arrived.

Having no car kinda sucks cause we will be base at Reyjavik and will do daily tours from there.

But oh wells, we try to make the best of it

I would not recommend this. The roads in Iceland are different than here I that there is basically no shoulder and the roads are raised so if a vehicle strays out of their lane they will go down an embankment, something that is steep like a cliff or something or just a foot or two or three. Since there is no shoulder to walk on, so you would be on the lower area and if a vehicles comes by that does not stay in their lane, it could be awful. Plus the weather. There is not typically a lot of snow, but it is the wind that will get you. It can and does blow vehicles off the road. We have been there when the winds were insane and just trying to stay upright walking in town was extremely difficult. We were having to lean all the way forward to stay upright.

Have you contacted the lodging to see if they could come get you or offer an alternative?
