Trollaskagi Peninsula

We fly from Reykjavik to Akureyri on part of our September trip, arriving around 12:30 pm and picking up a rental car at the airport. We are in Akureyri for two nights. I want to spend the next full day in the Myvatn area. Can anyone tell me how long it would take to drive the Trollaskagi Peninsula from Akureyri and back, allowing some reasonable time for sightseeing? I am thinking about doing that the half day when we arrive in Akureyri.

depends on your definition of "reasonable time for sightseeing". lots of iceland tourists drive ridiculous distances for seemingly no purpose other than to say they went somewhere. i assume you actually wish to stop for a stroll, wander about, pop in a museum, enjoy a meal.

driving the entire RT loop from akureyri and back would take about 5 hours, no stopping. siglufjordur is a popular stop. couple good museums. hofsos receives much PR for its pool--deservedly so. the emigration center is a winner as well. i enjoyed holar and its church. classical sunday summertime concerts.

what do you actually want to do? enjoy the outdoors? have a long sit down dinner? whale watching? hiking?

dalvik is a whale watching destination. but so is husavik--east of akureyri, N of myvatn. i liked husavik more. nice dining options in husavik too. plus the whale museum if you're around.

i didn't stop everywhere in trollaskagi, but i did write up my experience on my site. have a look if you'd like. btw, it rained quite a bit the first half of my trip coming from akureyri, so no hiking for me--though i planned on it. i drove in from myvatn, stopped for a swim in akureyri, then carried on. siglufjordur after lunch then hofsos in the PM. pool in evening, camped there. emigration ctr in AM, then holar in the PM for the concert. drove W to carry on my journey.
