Trip to Iceland Sept 2024

My wife and I went to Iceland 23-29 SEPT, and it was absolutely magnificent! We can't wait to go back to Iceland, we loved it so much!

We stayed at the Iceland Parliament Hotel and did excursions to Thingvellir, Strokkur, Gullfoss, and a Northern Lights tour; otherwise we stayed in Reykjavik. In Reykjavik we did a food tour, checked out the Settlement Exhibition, the National Museum, and Hallgrimskirkja; and walked all over 101 Reykjavik; and spent a day at Sky Lagoon, including the 7-Step Ritual. All of the meals we had were excellent, including the on-board meals from Icelandair. While in Reykjavik we ate at Grillmarkadurinn, Fiskurfelegid, Loki, Old Iceland, Braud & Co, Baejarins Beztu Pylsur, Apotek, and spent a number of times at Skuli Craft Bar.

Transportation: We had a direct 5.5 hr flight on Icelandair from IAD, it was easy and relaxed, we only do carry-ons when we travel. After arrival to KEF we took FlyBus to BSI. In Reykjavik we walked and took taxis. Returning home we got to KEF approx. 4 hrs before our flight, got through security quickly and waited for the passport control to open at 1330. The boarding process at KEF was a little chaotic, but not too bad.

Practicalities: Never used cash except buying water at the airport so I could get some kronurs for my dad. Otherwise all CC transactions. Make sure you have rain gear and a good coat/gloves/hat. Traffic in Reykjavik can get congested during the week, factor in potential traffic if you plan on going to Sky Lagoon or anywhere outside 101 Reykjavik. There is no tipping, price + taxes are factored into the price. Iceland is costly but worth it, factor the high costs for your trip. Cocktails are very pricey, stick to beer/wine/brennivin shots if you want to drink alcohol and cut down on costs. Icelandic beer is excellent, and brennivin is tasty.

For souvenirs we bought a lot of pictures/art from the various galleries near Laugarvegur and Skolavordustigur. I also bought an Icelandic Bible at Hallgrimskirkja, and an Icelandic-language book on Iceland's history. I started studying Icelandic 6 months prior to our trip, which helped, even though English is widely spoken. Don't be intimidated in learning Icelandic, it's a fun and fascinating language. A lot of Icelanders appreciated an American tourist attempting to learn and communicate in Icelandic. I plan on continuing my Icelandic studies and getting to an advanced level in the language.

Next time we go to Iceland we plan on going up to Akruyeri and visiting Forest Lagoon, the botanical gardens, and Einstok's main brewery, and general exploration around Akruyeri.

We overlapped a bit! I am so glad you enjoyed my favorite country:)

Yes, we have only needed cash once in Reykjavik, but have needed it on a number of occasions outside of there around the country. Cards are king, but some cash is necessary once you leave the city.

I love that you are trying to learn the language. I am too, but really struggle with it.

We head back again next summer:)

@mikliz97: That's awesome! Yea I get why Iceland is your favorite country, it's rapidly becoming one of mine too!

It's good to know we might need kronurs outside of Reykjavik, esp whenever we go to Akruyeri/other parts of iceland.

Icelandic is not an easy language at all, I've def struggled with some of it; but the more you work with it and see it, the easier it gets. Right now, I can read/write Icelandic and get the gist of news articles/books/signs, but speaking I'm still basically a toddler. There are good Icelandic language learning resources on Amazon, the Teach Yourself "Complete Icelandic" series--which goes up to the Intermediate level, and University of Iceland's Icelandic Online are both excellent. I also speak Spanish and Arabic, and limited Finnish, Farsi, and Portuguese. I guess I have a knack for languages :D.

Enjoy your trip next summer! I think we'll be going sometime in 2026/later, and we can't wait!

@CL: Thank you! Yea, Skuli Craft Bar is so chill and relaxed, we loved spending time there. Great beer selection.

cnelssvmi09--I definitely do not have a knack for languages, lol! But I am willing to try anything, so thank you I wail check it out. We went to Skull on our first trip and enjoyed it, but my husband does not drink anymore so we don't hit those places. We too are looking at 2026 as well, mostly because my husband wants to do the sailing trip between Iceland and Greenland again, and while I don't have the skills for that type of sailing, I would meet him and then we can venture out again in the north. Yes, you definitely want krona for your next trip. Even just 10k kr would be ample. On our trip last week we used 1000 kr for a hike, 5000 for a rustic hot spring, and 300kr pp for a bathroom. There is a hot spring on the east side of the Westfjords that is 1000kr pp as well. Plus some waterfalls between that area and Borgarnes that were cash only. So yeah, it is good to have some on hand:) If you are camping, you would need much more just for laundry and showers.
